  29. When do people finally understand that **there is no such thing as a setup
  30. that works for everybody** ?

  32. Posting comments like "This programs does not work, do it this way" usually
  33. only tend to confuse users. Please do not assume that just because one
  34. particular setup program worked for you, that it also works for everyone
  35. else. The opposite is true also: If a program failed to work for you,
  36. it may still work for other users.

  38. Installing AmiTCP 4.0demo and ppp.device 1.30 in this order (without any
  39. other dialers or install packages) *DOES* work for the majority of users
  40. and is always the preferred way to go. Just make sure that you actually
  41. *read* and *follow* the installation instructions in PPP.guide. And *DO
  42. NOT* follow instructions from other sources like "HotToUsePPP.lha". Most
  43. of these doc files are obsolete and only describe a few special cases.

  45. Once you have PPP up and running, if you need a better dialer or other
  46. additional features you can always add them later.

  48. After you installed and configured ppp.device and AmiTCP, first try simple
  49. things like "ping", "telnet" and "ncftp". This will at least tell you if
  50. your Internet connection is working. Do not attempt to run "AMosaic"
  51. or other browsers as your first program. Only run them once you know that
  52. your setup is working.

  54. If you use the above method and cannot get your connection to work, do not
  55. play around with the settings and/or try different installation programs.
  56. This will usually just mess up your installation and make it much more
  57. difficult to correct it later. If you *have* to re-install, be sure to
  58. first delete *all* traces of AmiTCP, i.e. try something like
  59. "delete AmiTCP:#? all" before re-installing everything.

  61. If you still have problems, just send me your startnet file, your dial
  62. script, your ppp0.config file and a PPPLog file with LOG=50. The PPP docs
  63. describe how to create one. In most cases I can then pinpoint what your
  64. problem is and tell you how to correct it. If you use any other installation
  65. package I will usually not be able to help you if you have any problems,
  66. and would have to refer you to the author of that package instead.
